I'll add my voice to this chorus if it helps.
I've played since 2005.
As of Summer 2010, I have been on the fence with my subscriptions(5x). I canceled for a while for a long list of issues (which have been put forward and discussed by the community for a long while), and for the first time checked out other MMOs. EvE was my first and my favorite.
All these problems listed in this thread that have been highlighted are important and should be answered by CCP.
I wrote in threads on the forums that Incarna should be optional. I said we should have a button while docked to exit our pods. But CCP devs did not listen to any of us who were saying that. Or you heard what we said and went forward anyway. Now CCP sees the result. But that is just one issue.
I appreciate that CCP has listened to the community at times. For example, I added a number of thoughts to the Features and Ideas Discussion forum which were incorporated into the game. Not that I was the only voice asking for it. But ship to pod in station was one. Camera shaking during warp became optional. And the lights in the stations were fixed so they didn't blind me everytime I docked by rotating into my face (for the most part). So I know the company listened at those times.
I've watched all the posted vids of the different Fanfests, and I have found the different presentations interesting. As well as the different personalities of the developers. I appreciate the innovation, the intelligence, the hopes of the development team. Though I think that greed... as the internal newsletter calls it has taken its toll on the company/consumer relationship.
Greed is a good thing in a game, in a virtual universe like EvE. Greed is a bad thing in real life. And trying to make it a good thing in real life is just disgusting. Greed is a product of selfishness, which is the single root of all evil.
In observation, I see a cycle that occurs with all companies in a capitalistic system. The company starts small, has big dreams, produces the best product it can with amazing quality. Or the best service. Or the best entertainment.
Then what happens is the company grows, people love what the company offers and throws their cash at the feet of the company in appreciation for the quality, excellent product or service.
Next, the company gets comfortable. And that is the climax of the journey. They have produced something great, then they get comfortable because the cash comes in and they sit back and relish the rewards of their labor. There is happiness, the company is happy, the consumer is happy.
Finally, greed sets in, which beings the downward spiral of said company. The management team, board, and shareholders get complacent, get fat with power and money. Have all the best of life and simply begin not to care anymore. They begin to want to maximize profits at the expense of the consumer. And they begin to not care about the individual anymore that pays them for their product. They are so big they think, so what if we lose a few here and there. We still have all the resources coming in we need.
So the game becomes: Lets get the most money for the least quality. Lets get the most money for the least amount of work. Lets get as much money as possible giving as little as possible in return. That maximizes profits. The corporate machine sacrifices the consumer. Then the corporate machine sacrifices their own employees. The downward spiral continues on.
So how to fix it CCP? I believe you know the answer, and you CCP are the only one who can do it. Remember who you were before greed infected your business.
As for me... I renewed for the 2 month deal. 19.95 for two months worked well for me for five subscriptions. But, I have canceled my subscriptions because its the same old story again... and again... and again.
If you fix all the problems, answer all the questions... I'll come back. --
Got a problem? Talk to my gun.
